Clopidogrel belongs to a group of medicines called antiplatelet drugs. Platelets are very small cells found in the blood, they are smaller than red or white blood cells, and they are added when the blood clots. By preventing platelet aggregation, antiplatelet drugs reduce the possibility of blood clots (a process called thrombosis).
Clopidogrel is administered to prevent the formation of blood clots (thrombi) in hardened blood vessels (arteries), a process known as atherothrombosis, which can lead to atherothrombotic effects (such as stroke, heart attack or death).
